How your exact age is worked out
Your age is the time from your date of birth to today, counted in completed years, then the months and days since your last birthday. Forms in India usually ask for age in completed years, or age on a cut-off date such as 1 January or the last date of an application. The calculator handles months of 28–31 days and leap years, and also shows your age in weeks, days and hours, and the days left to your next birthday.
How age is calculated
First count completed years. Then count whole months since the last birthday, and then the remaining days; if today's day of the month is earlier than your birth day, a month is 'borrowed' and its number of days is added. Total days count every calendar day, including 29 February in leap years.
Good to know
- Age on a cut-off date (for exams, jobs or school admission) is worked out the same way, using the cut-off date instead of today.
- If you were born on 29 February, your birthday falls on 28 February or 1 March in non-leap years; for legal age, the day after 28 February is usually taken.
- Most forms want age in completed years, so 31 years and 11 months is still '31'.
- Your date of birth on official records (birth certificate, school certificate, Aadhaar or passport) is the one that counts; make sure they match.
- Age in days is handy for babies' milestones and some insurance and visa rules.
Worked example
- Born on 15 August 1995; today is 12 October 2026
- Completed years: from 15 August 1995 to 15 August 2026 = 31 years
- Then 15 August to 15 September = 1 month, and 15 September to 12 October = 27 days
- Age: 31 years, 1 month and 27 days
- Next birthday on 15 August 2027, 307 days away
