What is a savings goal calculator?

A savings goal calculator tells you how long it will take to reach a target amount, such as an emergency fund, a car down payment or a holiday, if you start with your current savings and add a fixed amount every month. It accounts for interest earned along the way, so you can see how much of the goal comes from your own deposits and how much from returns.

How the time to your goal is calculated

Balance = Balance × (1 + r) + Monthly deposit, repeated until Balance ≥ Goal

r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100). Each month the balance earns interest and your deposit is added; the calculator repeats this until the balance reaches the goal. It assumes deposits at the end of each month and a constant rate. For goals within a few years, use the rate of a safe option such as an FD or recurring deposit rather than equity returns.

Tips for reaching savings goals faster

  • Build an emergency fund of 3–6 months' expenses first, in a savings account, liquid fund or sweep-in FD.
  • Automate it: set up a recurring deposit or SIP on salary day, so the money is saved before you can spend it.
  • Match the investment to the timeline: for goals under 3 years, stick to FDs, RDs or debt funds; equity suits goals 5 or more years away.
  • Increase your monthly deposit whenever your salary rises.
  • Keep separate accounts or RDs for separate goals, so you can track each one.

Worked example: ₹10 lakh goal

  1. Goal: ₹10,00,000. Already saved: ₹1,00,000. Monthly deposit: ₹10,000 at 8% a year
  2. Month 1: ₹1,00,000 earns ₹667 in interest, plus the ₹10,000 deposit, giving ₹1,10,667
  3. The goal is reached after 68 months: 5 years and 8 months
  4. You put in ₹7,80,000 in total (including the ₹1 lakh you started with); interest covers the remaining ₹2.2 lakh or so
  5. Raising the deposit to ₹15,000 a month gets you there in 4 years and 1 month

Frequently Asked Questions

A common guideline is to save at least 20% of your take-home pay, but the right amount depends on your goals. Work backwards: decide the target and the date, then use this calculator or the SIP Goal Planner to find the monthly amount.
For goals within about 3 years, use options that won't fall in value: fixed deposits, recurring deposits, liquid funds or short-term debt funds. Equity can drop sharply over short periods.
Use the rate of wherever you'll keep the money: your bank's FD or RD rate for deposits, or a conservative expected return for debt funds. Use equity returns only for goals that are many years away.
Yes, for goals more than a couple of years away. A car or a holiday will cost more by the time you've saved, so increase your target using the Inflation Calculator.
Interest from savings accounts, FDs and RDs, and gains from debt funds, are taxed at your slab rate. If you're in a higher tax bracket, plan using the post-tax return.
