Converting height between feet and centimetres
In India height is usually given in feet and inches in everyday talk and on matrimonial profiles, but in centimetres on medical forms, passports and job applications. This converter switches between the two instantly.
Height conversion formula
cm = (feet × 12 + inches) × 2.54
One inch is exactly 2.54 cm and one foot is 12 inches (30.48 cm). To go from centimetres to feet and inches, divide by 2.54 to get total inches, then split into feet (÷ 12) and the inches left over.
Good to know
- Measure height in the morning, without shoes, standing straight against a wall; people are slightly shorter by evening.
- Height and weight together give your BMI, which is used to check whether your weight is in a healthy range.
- On forms, round to the nearest centimetre; on feet-and-inches forms, round to the nearest inch.
- 1 metre = 100 cm = about 3 feet 3.4 inches.
Worked example
- 5 feet 6 inches = 5 × 12 + 6 = 66 inches
- 66 × 2.54 = 167.6 cm
- Going back: 175 cm ÷ 2.54 = 68.9 inches, about 69 inches
- 69 inches = 5 feet 9 inches
