How much fuel will your trip cost?

This calculator works out the fuel you need and what it will cost for any trip, from your car or bike's mileage (km per litre) and the fuel price. Tick round trip to double the distance.

Fuel cost formula

Fuel needed = distance ÷ mileage · Cost = fuel needed × price per litre

Cost per km is simply the price per litre divided by the mileage. Use the mileage you actually get, not the ARAI figure in the brochure; real-world mileage is often 15–25% lower, especially in city traffic.

Getting better mileage

  • Keep tyres at the recommended pressure; under-inflated tyres can cut mileage noticeably.
  • On the highway, driving at 80–90 km/h rather than 110–120 km/h uses noticeably less fuel.
  • Running the AC costs some mileage, but on the highway it is usually better than driving with the windows down.
  • Toll charges can add a lot on highway trips; include them in your budget.
  • CNG cars usually cost about half as much per km as petrol, and charging an EV at home costs less still. Compare them with the EV charging cost calculator.
  • Fuel prices differ between states because of VAT, so filling up before crossing a border can save a little.

Worked example

  1. A 500 km trip in a car that gives 15 km a litre, with petrol at ₹95
  2. Fuel needed = 500 ÷ 15 = 33.3 litres
  3. Cost = 33.3 × ₹95 = ₹3,167
  4. Cost per km = ₹95 ÷ 15 = ₹6.33
  5. Round trip (1,000 km): ₹6,333 in fuel

Frequently Asked Questions

Divide the distance by your mileage to get the litres needed, then multiply by the price per litre. 300 km at 15 km/L with petrol at ₹100 costs 20 × 100 = ₹2,000.
Divide the fuel price by the mileage. At ₹95 a litre and 15 km/L, it costs about ₹6.33 per km.
Fill the tank to full and reset the trip meter. At the next full fill-up, divide the kilometres driven by the litres you put in.
A bike that gives 50 km/L costs about ₹1.90 per km with petrol at ₹95.
Usually yes. CNG is sold per kg and cars typically get 20–30 km per kg, so the cost per km is often about half that of petrol.
