How many tiles do I need?
Divide the floor or wall area by the area of one tile, then add extra for cutting at the edges and for breakage. Tiles are sold in boxes, so round up to whole boxes. This calculator works in feet or metres and includes the common Indian tile sizes, from 1 × 1 ft to 2 × 4 ft.
Tile formula
Tiles = area ÷ tile area · With wastage = tiles × (1 + wastage %) · Boxes = tiles with wastage ÷ tiles per box, rounded up
A 600 × 600 mm tile covers 0.36 m² (3.875 sq ft). Use about 10% wastage for a straight layout and 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns.
Tiling tips
- Order all the tiles at once. Shades and sizes vary between batches, so a later top-up may not match.
- Larger tiles mean fewer joints but more waste in small or irregular rooms.
- Keep a few spare tiles after the job for future repairs.
- Floor tiles in bathrooms and outdoors should be anti-skid (matt or textured finish).
- For skirting, measure the room's perimeter less the doors; it's usually cut from the same tiles.
Worked example: a 12 × 10 ft room in 2 × 2 ft tiles
- Floor area: 12 × 10 = 120 sq ft, or 11.15 m²
- One 600 × 600 mm tile covers 0.36 m²: 11.15 ÷ 0.36 = 30.97, so 31 tiles
- With 10% wastage: 35 tiles
- 4 tiles per box: 35 ÷ 4 = 8.75, so 9 boxes (36 tiles)
