Significant figures (sig figs) are digits that carry meaningful information about the precision of a measurement. They are crucial in science and engineering to ensure calculations don't imply more precision than the original data supports.

Rules for Counting

• Non-zeros: Always significant (1-9).
• Zeros between non-zeros: Always significant (e.g., 101).
• Leading zeros: Never significant (e.g., 0.005 has 1 sig fig).
• Trailing zeros: Significant ONLY if there is a decimal point (e.g., 2.00 has 3 sig figs).
