What is your salary per hour?
Converting a yearly salary into an hourly rate helps you compare job offers with different hours, value overtime or side work, and set a freelance rate. Because paid leave and holidays are paid but not worked, this calculator shows both your rate per contracted hour and per hour you actually work.
How the hourly rate is worked out
Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × 52)
Monthly pay is the annual amount ÷ 12, weekly ÷ 52, and daily ÷ (working days per week × 52). For the rate per hour actually worked, the hours of paid leave and holidays are taken out of the year. Use your CTC to compare offers, or your in-hand pay to see what you take home per hour.
Using your hourly rate
- When comparing offers, use the hours you'll really work, including regular late evenings and weekend calls, not just the official timings.
- A freelancer needs a much higher rate than an employee's hourly pay, often 1.5–2 times, to cover unpaid time, leave, equipment, health insurance and gaps between projects.
- CTC includes the employer's PF, gratuity and sometimes variable pay, so the hourly rate on CTC is higher than what reaches your bank.
- Under Indian labour law, working hours for many workers are capped at 48 a week, with overtime paid at twice the ordinary rate. Rules vary by state and sector.
Worked example
- A salary of ₹12 lakh a year, working 45 hours a week over 5 days
- Monthly: ₹1,00,000; per working day: ₹4,615
- Per contracted hour: ₹12,00,000 ÷ (45 × 52) = ₹513
- With 30 days of paid leave and holidays, you work 2,070 hours a year, so you earn ₹580 per hour actually worked
- A 6-day, 48-hour week at the same salary works out to ₹481 per contracted hour
