How to convert CGPA to percentage

Many Indian schools and universities grade on a 10-point CGPA (cumulative grade point average) scale, but job applications, entrance forms and admissions abroad often ask for a percentage. This calculator converts CGPA to percentage and back, using the formula your board or university uses.

CGPA to percentage formulas

CBSE: % = CGPA × 9.5 · Many universities: % = CGPA × 10 · VTU: % = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10

Each board or university decides its own conversion, and it is usually printed on the back of the marksheet or in the exam rules. CBSE used 9.5 because it found that the average marks of students scoring a 10 grade point came to about 95%. To go from percentage to CGPA, reverse the formula: for CBSE, CGPA = % ÷ 9.5.

Before you write a percentage on a form

  • Always use your own university's formula. If the marksheet doesn't give one, ask the exam section for a conversion certificate, which many employers and universities abroad accept.
  • Some universities use different formulas for different batches or programmes, so check the rules for your year of admission.
  • If a form asks for CGPA and percentage, give both, with the formula you used.
  • CBSE has issued marks rather than CGPA for Class 10 since 2018, so the 9.5 rule applies to older certificates.
  • Universities abroad often evaluate Indian marks themselves or through services such as WES, and may not use these formulas.

Worked example

  1. A CGPA of 8.5
  2. CBSE: 8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75%
  3. CGPA × 10 rule: 8.5 × 10 = 85%
  4. VTU: (8.5 − 0.75) × 10 = 77.5%
  5. Going the other way, 75% under CBSE is 75 ÷ 9.5 = 7.89 CGPA
