CGPA to Percentage: CBSE, VTU, Anna University and Others (2026)
Job applications, entrance forms and admissions abroad often ask for a percentage, while your marksheet shows a CGPA out of 10. There is no single national formula: each board or university decides its own. Here are the common ones and how to use them.
The three common formulas
| Board or university | Formula | 8.5 CGPA becomes |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE (Class 10 and 12, older certificates) | CGPA × 9.5 | 80.75% |
| Many universities, such as Anna University | CGPA × 10 | 85% |
| VTU | (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | 77.5% |
Always use your own university's rule. It is usually printed on the back of the marksheet or in the exam regulations. If you can't find it, ask the exam section for a conversion certificate; employers and universities abroad generally accept it.
Why CBSE multiplies by 9.5
CBSE looked at the marks of students who scored a grade point of 10 and found they averaged about 95%. So it set the conversion at 9.5 marks per grade point. CBSE has issued marks instead of CGPA for Class 10 since 2018, so the rule matters mainly for older certificates.
CGPA to percentage chart
| CGPA | CBSE (× 9.5) | × 10 | VTU |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.0 | 57% | 60% | 52.5% |
| 6.5 | 61.75% | 65% | 57.5% |
| 7.0 | 66.5% | 70% | 62.5% |
| 7.5 | 71.25% | 75% | 67.5% |
| 8.0 | 76% | 80% | 72.5% |
| 8.5 | 80.75% | 85% | 77.5% |
| 9.0 | 85.5% | 90% | 82.5% |
| 9.5 | 90.25% | 95% | 87.5% |
| 10.0 | 95% | 100% | 92.5% |
Percentage to CGPA
Reverse the formula. For CBSE, divide the percentage by 9.5: 75% is 7.89 CGPA and 76% is exactly 8.0. For the × 10 rule, divide by 10.
What to write on forms
- Campus placements: many recruiters set a cut-off of 60% or 6 CGPA, sometimes 7. Under CBSE's formula, 6.5 CGPA is only 61.75%, so check which number the company asks for.
- If the form asks for both, fill in both and mention the formula, for example "8.2 CGPA (77.9% per CBSE conversion)".
- Universities abroad usually evaluate your marksheets themselves or through a service such as WES, and may not use any of these formulas.
- Don't round up. 7.9 CGPA under CBSE is 75.05%, not 76%.
