What is a Salary Calculator?

A Salary Calculator helps you understand the breakdown of your compensation package — from gross salary to net take-home pay. It factors in components like basic salary, HRA, special allowances, PF contributions, professional tax, and income tax deductions. Understanding your salary structure is essential for financial planning, tax optimization, and salary negotiations.

Frequently Asked Questions

CTC (Cost to Company) is the total amount your employer spends on you, including base salary, allowances, PF contributions, insurance, and bonuses. Take-home (net) salary is what you actually receive after deductions for PF, professional tax, and income tax. Typically, take-home is 60-75% of CTC.
Gross salary = Basic + HRA + Allowances + Bonuses (before deductions). Net salary = Gross salary - Employee PF - Professional Tax - Income Tax. Gross salary does not include employer contributions like employer PF.
HRA exemption is the minimum of: (1) Actual HRA received, (2) 50% of basic salary (metro cities) or 40% (non-metro), or (3) Actual rent paid minus 10% of basic salary. The exempted amount is tax-free under the Old Regime.
Professional Tax is a state-level tax on salaried individuals, capped at ₹2,500 per year. Not all states levy it — Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, AP, and Telangana are among those that do. It's deducted monthly by the employer.
