Converting metric and imperial lengths
India uses metres and kilometres officially, but feet and inches are still everyday units for heights, room sizes and screens. This converter changes between millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres, inches, feet, yards and miles.
Length conversion formulas
1 inch = 2.54 cm · 1 foot = 30.48 cm · 1 mile = 1.609 km
Imperial units are defined exactly in metric terms: an inch is 2.54 cm, a foot 12 inches, a yard 3 feet (0.9144 m) and a mile 1,760 yards (1.609344 km). All conversions go through metres.
Good to know
- A quick estimate: metres × 3.3 gives feet, and feet × 0.3 gives metres.
- Room and plot areas are in square feet or square metres; use the land area converter for those.
- Screen sizes are measured diagonally in inches.
- A 'gaj' is a square yard, an area unit, not a length.
Worked example
- A room 12 feet long = 12 × 0.3048 = 3.66 m
- A 55-inch TV screen (diagonal) = 55 × 2.54 = 139.7 cm
- 10 km = 6.21 miles
- 1 metre = 3.28 feet = 39.37 inches
