How are working days counted?
Working days are the calendar days between two dates minus weekly offs and holidays. In India the weekly off depends on where you work: most offices close on Saturday and Sunday, many shops and factories only on Sunday, and banks on Sunday and the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month. This calculator handles all three, takes out the national holidays and any others you add, and can also find the date a given number of working days ahead.
Working days formula
Both the start and end dates are counted. A holiday that falls on a weekly off is counted once, as the weekly off. When adding working days, the start date itself isn't counted.
Good to know
- Under RBI rules, banks are closed on all Sundays and on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month.
- Only Republic Day (26 Jan), Independence Day (15 Aug) and Gandhi Jayanti (2 Oct) fall on the same date every year. Other gazetted holidays such as Holi, Eid and Diwali move, so add them for your year.
- State governments declare their own extra holidays, so check your state's list for exact counts.
- Notice periods, leave and some legal deadlines may be counted in calendar days rather than working days. Check which one applies.
- A year with Saturday and Sunday off has about 260 weekdays before holidays.
Worked example: January 2026
- 1 to 31 January 2026 is 31 calendar days
- Saturday and Sunday off: 5 Saturdays and 4 Sundays, so 9 weekly offs
- Republic Day, 26 January, falls on a Monday: 1 holiday
- Working days: 31 − 9 − 1 = 21
- 10 working days after Friday 23 January is Monday 9 February (26 January is skipped)
