Digital Color Spaces

Colors are represented differently depending on the context. HEX and RGB are standard for screen display, while HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) is more intuitive for humans to manually adjust and design.

Conversion Methodology

RGB uses intensities of Red, Green, and Blue (0-255). HEX is simply the hexadecimal representation of those three values concatenated. HSL maps these onto a cylindrical coordinate system.

Frequently Asked Questions

HSL makes it easy to create lighter or darker versions of a color by just changing the 'Lightness' percentage, which is difficult to do by guessing RGB values.
RGBA includes an 'Alpha' channel, which controls the transparency of the color (0 is fully transparent, 1 is fully opaque).
