Converting Fahrenheit and Celsius
Most Indian thermometers show body temperature in Fahrenheit, while weather reports and lab reports use Celsius. This converter changes between Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin, and the chart below shows what body temperatures mean.
Temperature conversion formulas
°C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 · °F = °C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32 · K = °C + 273.15
Water freezes at 0 °C (32 °F) and boils at 100 °C (212 °F), so 100 Celsius degrees span 180 Fahrenheit degrees. That's why you multiply or divide by 9/5 and adjust by 32.
Body temperature and fever
- Normal body temperature ranges from about 97 °F to 99 °F (36.1–37.2 °C) and is lower in the morning.
- A fever is usually 100.4 °F (38 °C) or higher.
- See a doctor for a fever of 103 °F (39.4 °C) or more, a fever lasting more than 3 days, or any fever in a baby under 3 months.
- Readings taken under the arm are about 0.5–1 °F lower than oral readings.

Worked example
- A thermometer shows 101 °F
- 101 − 32 = 69; 69 × 5 ÷ 9 = 38.3 °C
- Normal body temperature, 98.6 °F, is 37 °C
- A 40 °C summer day is 40 × 9 ÷ 5 + 32 = 104 °F
