Calculate Your Kua Number: The Key to Personalized Feng Shui

Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art of arranging your living space to harmonize with the energetic forces of the natural world. But did you know that optimal Feng Shui isn't a one-size-fits-all approach?

Placing a desk facing North might bring immense career success to one person, while causing extreme stress to another.

To truly unlock the power of Feng Shui, you must first discover your Kua Number (also spelled Gua). This unique number dictates your personal energetic polarity and reveals the exact compass directions that are lucky and unlucky for you.

Understanding the East and West Groups

Once calculated, your Kua number will fall between 1 and 9 (excluding 5). Based on this result, you are categorized into one of two fundamental energetic groups:

  • The East Group (Numbers 1, 3, 4, 9): People in this group attract their most auspicious energy when facing North, South, East, and Southeast.
  • The West Group (Numbers 2, 6, 7, 8): People in this group thrive when facing West, Southwest, Northwest, and Northeast.

Why is the number 5 excluded? In traditional Eight Mansions Feng Shui, 5 represents the geometric center. If the math results in a 5, males are assigned Kua 2, and females are assigned Kua 8.

How to Calculate Your Kua Number

The mathematical calculation for your Kua number depends on two factors: your gender assigned at birth and your birth year according to the classical Chinese Lunar Calendar.

Important: If you were born in January or early February, you must check the Lunar calendar. You may technically belong to the previous year!

The Formula

Step 1: Reduce your birth year Take the last two digits of your lunar birth year and add them together. If the sum is a double digit, add them again until you have a single digit. Example: 1986 -> 8 + 6 = 14 -> 1 + 4 = 5.

Step 2: Apply the Gender Modifier

  • For Males: Subtract your reduced number from 10 (If born after 2000, subtract from 9). Example: 10 - 5 = 5. (Since a 5 becomes a 2 for males, the Kua is 2).
  • For Females: Add 5 to your reduced number (If born after 2000, add 6). If the result is two digits, reduce to a single digit. Example: 5 + 5 = 10 -> 1 + 0 = 1. (The Kua is 1).

Utilizing Your Lucky Directions

Once you know your Kua number and group, you will unpack four specific "Auspecious" directions and four "Inauspicious" directions.

Here is how you use your lucky directions in daily life:

  1. Sheng Chi (Wealth/Success): Face this direction when working at your desk, negotiating contracts, or actively trying to generate income.
  2. Tien Yi (Health): Sleep with the crown of your head pointing in this direction to promote rapid recovery from illness and incredibly restful sleep.
  3. Nien Yen (Relationships): Face this direction when going on a date, resolving a conflict with a spouse, or engaging in family activities.
  4. Fu Wei (Personal Growth): Sit facing this direction when meditating, studying for exams, or trying to find spiritual peace.
